Creative Ways to Store Winter Clothing and Accessories

Spring is in the air, and with it comes thoughts of warmer weather and packing away all of our winter clothing and accessories. If you’re like most people, you probably have a lot of stuff that needs to be put away. While many people might just stuff everything into a closet or storage bin, there are actually a lot of creative ways to store your winter clothing that can make it much easier to find come fall. Here are some creative ways to store those items, so they’re easily accessible when you need them.

Prepare Your Winter Clothing for Storing

To get your winter clothing and accessories ready for storing, you’ll need to take a few steps.

  • First, wash or dry clean everything. This will help prevent mold and mildew from forming.
  • Next, repair any damaged items. Then, fold or roll your clothing to take up less space.
  • Finally, make sure all of your items are correctly labeled with the season and year they were worn.

Store Your Winter Clothing

It’s time to store your winter clothing now that you’ve cleaned them and removed any snow, salt, or grime that might stain or harm the fabric. Here are some great storage options for your winter gear:

  • Vacuum bags are a great way to store clothing, especially bulky sweaters and jackets. The air is sucked out of the bag, shrinking the item inside and taking up much less space. Plus, because vacuum bags are airtight, they keep your clothing clean and free of dust.
  • Empty luggage is perfect for storing out-of-season clothing. If you have old suitcases that you don’t use anymore, put them to good use by filling them with your off-season clothes. You can even stack them in a closet or under the bed to save space.
  • Garment bags are another great option for storing clothing. They keep your items clean and free of wrinkles, and they take up less space than hanging them in a closet.
  • Plastic storage containers with lids are great for storing off-season clothing, too. They keep your items dust-free and protected from moisture.

Storing Winter Accessories

While you’re getting your winter clothing ready for storage, don’t forget about your accessories. Hats, gloves, scarves, and boots can all be stored in a variety of ways:

  • Hats and gloves can be stored together in a mesh bag or container. This will help keep them organized and easy to find.
  • Scarves can be hung on a scarf rack or stored in a drawer to keep them wrinkle-free.
  • Boots can be stored in a boot tray or box. This will help keep them from getting scuffed or dirty. You can also use boot shapers to help them maintain their shape.
  • Other big items like comforters, blankets, and quilts can be stored in a large storage container or bin and put in the attic or basement until you need them again.

Tips to Keep Your Winter Clothing and Accessories in Good Condition

Now that you know how to store your winter clothing and accessories, the next thing is to know how to keep them in good condition so that you can use them for the next winter.

  • Make sure that your clothing and accessories are clean before you store them. This will help to prevent any mildew or bacteria from forming.
  • If you have any down coats or jackets, make sure to store them in a sealed bag or container. This will help to keep the down from getting wet and losing its loft.
  • Wool clothing and blankets should be stored in a cool, dry place. You can also store them in a cedar chest or closet to help repel moths. Mothballs should not be used with wool, as they can damage the fibers.
  • Fur coats and other fur items should be stored in a cool, dry place as well. You can hang furs on padded hangers or store them in acid-free tissue paper. Do not store them in plastic bags, as this can cause the fur to become brittle.
  • If you have any hats or gloves that are made from wool, cashmere, or other delicate materials, make sure to store them in a sealed bag or container. This will help to protect them from becoming stained or damaged.
  • Make sure to label all of your winter clothing and accessories with the date that they were stored. This will help you to keep track of when they need to be replaced.

Storing your winter clothing and accessories properly will help to keep them in good condition and extend their life. By following these tips, you can be sure that your winter wardrobe will be ready for the next season.
