Is There Such a Thing as an Anti-Aging Diet?

Research studies clearly indicate that a well-balanced diet is one of the best anti-aging strategies you can follow. A simple diet that provides sufficient quantities of nutrients is perhaps the best anti-aging diet. Nutrition plays a significant role in the aging process. Making some simple changes in diet could ward off many age-related diseases and slow down – mind you, not halt the process of aging.

To keep you in optimal health, start good eating habits early; it is the key component of an anti-aging diet.

In countries that border the Mediterranean Sea, diets are best known for their anti-aging qualities. Although these diets may differ in many aspects, many dietary characteristics remain the same like high consumption of fruits, vegetables, cereals, and bread, beans, nuts, and potatoes. Extra virgin olive oil is generally used which is an important monounsaturated fat source. Very little red meat is consumed, but fish and poultry are eaten in fairly moderate amounts, and eggs around 2-4 times a week. Daily consumption of red wine forms a basic part of the diet plan.

The average Mediterranean diet has a lesser amount of saturated fat than the American diet. More than half of the calories come from monounsaturated fats like olive oil—which are especially noted for keeping blood cholesterol levels in check. This is why the incidence of heart disease and death rate is lower in these regions than in the United States.

Okinawa, which is at the southernmost tip of the Japanese island, has a record number of people who are healthy centenarians. Their diet is simple; it comprises less salt, and more tofu and pork; They also eat unusual condiments and foods that contribute to their health and longevity. They eat brown pickled seaweeds, bitter melon, purple sweet potatoes, and turmeric in their diet and drink lots of jasmine tea. Their exotic foods, condiments, and beverages are known for their anti-aging elements. It is for this reason that Japanese women are known to never show their age. However, all the foods consumed are in smaller quantities unlike in America where we tend to eat large portions of food.

Studies indicate that it is not just foods, but how the foods are eaten also matters. Although the French eat rich foods they generally remain thin and fit. Why is it so? Well, there is no rush to eating; they eat their food very slowly; they savor and enjoy every bite of it; they do not appreciate fast foods like here in the U. S. Their diet lays emphasis on cutting down the portion size and hence the use of 9-inch plate instead of 11-13 inch plates typically used in U.S. Research studies also indicate that approximately 6% of adults in France are obese in comparison to 18% in the U.S. The best possible anti-aging diet originates in France. In the French diet, fresh ingredients locally grown are primarily used and very few processed foods are consumed as here in the U.S.

Another good anti-aging diet is the calorie-reduction diet. This is the kind of diet that encourages calorie restriction and is linked to promoting longevity. Those who strictly adhere to this diet are generally known to be thin as calories are cut by almost 30% resulting in a substantial weight loss; for example, instead of consuming 1800 calories, you voluntarily consume only 1200 calories daily. This restriction is done voluntarily to maintain a healthy diet plan. Studies indicate that those who follow it claim to feel energized and report very good health.

The best possible anti-aging diet would probably be your own carefully devised comprehensive diet plan. After carefully evaluating the different kinds of food, it would be ideal to consume a balanced diet comprising of simple plant foods having high fiber content. Flavonoids-rich foods are known to reduce the death rate from all causes; foods rich in vitamin C and foods having low fats, are good for health and ideal to include in your anti-aging diet plan.

By adopting ways to change your lifestyle and diet, you can age slower and live longer. More importantly, you can dramatically improve the quality of your life. Hopefully, by focusing on the salient features of the above anti-aging diets, you can stay more active and fit, more energetic and healthy for the rest of your life
