The Answer Might Be Blowing In The Wind, But Your Home Won’t Be Thanks To These Improvements

May 20, 2025 · In: Home

If storms are forecast or you live in a particularly exposed area, wind can be a real problem for your property. Like the big bad wolf, those gales will huff, puff, and possibly even blow your house down if you don’t take key preventative steps. Even if that doesn’t happen, damage from high winds can quickly get expensive.

Unfortunately, unlike rain and sun, wind isn’t always an easy thing to protect against. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to batten down the hatches at home, and we’re going to consider the best wind-based improvements you can make in this article.

1. Give Your Roof a Fighting Chance

Nowhere in your home stands to face as much wind damage as your roof. After all, your roofing materials are right up there fighting the windy fight, and they aren’t always going to come out of that battle looking their best. Cracked or broken tiles are an especially high risk in windy conditions, and they could quickly lead to interior leaks or further roof-based damage.

Luckily, there is a way to improve your roof’s chances. You simply need to keep your roof in the best condition possible. Regular checks, repairs, and even whole roof replacements like those offered by A&J Professional Services will all serve as the battle armor your roof needs to survive even the worst wind batterings. It’s also essential to conduct regular roofing checks, which will allow you to address any wind damage long before the problem has a chance to develop.

2. Reinforce Where Possible

Wind feeds on weak housing materials that it can rip right off with a strong gale, but you can give those gales a run for their money by simply reinforcing your property wherever possible. The most obvious option here is to pay particular attention to door and window reinforcements, like strengthening hinges or even security bars.

Siding is another great option for reinforcing your home at large. As well as looking fantastic, this addition could prove vital if you live in a particularly stormy area. Siding literally provides a protective barrier around your home, which can help with resisting everything from strong winds and wind-driven rain, to any impact caused by loose debris or other wind-strewn items.

3. Keep Your Gutters and Drains Clean

Few weather types are worse than strong wind and driving rain, especially where your home is concerned. You’ll find yourself in particular trouble if these two weather types meet with your mud-caked or poorly maintained gutters and drains. Before you know it, you’ll be dealing with significant water leaks that you may struggle to get a hold on.

Investing in professional gutter and drain cleaning offers a quick and easy fix for this problem, and it’s a step you should ideally take at least twice a year, especially in a windy area where debris is inevitable.

Wind is one of the worst weather conditions for your home, but you can protect your property from even the biggest gales using these top tips.
