How to Accommodate Guests With Dietary Restrictions

February 2, 2023 · In: Food

It may seem like quite the challenge to accommodate guests with dietary restrictions when you are serving meals. With some simple techniques, however, you can make this easier on yourself.

Offer A Wide Variety Of Foods

One way to accommodate guests with different dietary restrictions is to try to serve a wide range of foods. Obviously, this can be more work, but you might not need to make as much of each. You can also freeze some and serve leftovers on other days. Try to get something to accommodate everyone.

Serve Meals In Parts

Let’s say that you usually make a meal with meat in it but you have a vegetarian guest. Of course, you could make two separate versions of the meal. Another idea is to serve the meat separately and let people add it themselves.

You can do this with other restrictions as well. If someone cannot have a lot of salt because of a blood pressure problem then you can cook with less salt and let people add it on after. If people are trying to eat healthier, then put higher fat items such as butter on the side for people to add instead of adding it yourself. You can also just try to find ways to accommodate everyone such as cooking from a low-fat cookbook if someone wants to eat healthier.

You can also look to purchase premade food for that individual person instead of needing to cook entire meals separately for them. For instance, if someone only eats kosher, then you can purchase an already-cooked meal from a kosher supermarket.

Be Very Careful With Allergies

You will want to be extremely careful if you have guests that have allergies. Some people have very serious allergies to food such as peanuts, and they may react if they simply touch a dish in which it is an ingredient.

It may be a problem if you use the same spoon or spatula with one and then the other. You should be sure to find out if anyone is this sensitive. If so you may want to cook completely without the allergen or make certain that the person’s food is not cross-contaminated.

You will want to accommodate your guests as much as possible when you are entertaining. You should also garner their advice. They may be able to tell you some of the foods that are good for them. Otherwise, the above tips can help you in your meal preparations.
