The Dos and Don’ts of Moving with Pets

April 15, 2024 · In: Home

Relocating is an exciting journey, but it can be a bit complex for pet owners. It’s not just about packing boxes. It’s also about ensuring your furry, feathered, or scaled companions are comfortable and safe throughout the transition. Proper pre-move organization is key to a smooth process for everyone. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at some tips and tricks to make moving a breeze for your animal companions.

Pre-Move Preparation: Setting the Stage for Success

Embarking on a move with your pet requires more than just packing boxes. Importantly, it involves careful planning to ensure their comfort and security. Preparing in advance can significantly reduce stress for the entire family. To start with, you should schedule a vet visit for a health check and update your pet’s ID tags. Early scheduling avoids last-minute rushes that can unsettle your pet. Secondly, gradually introduce your pet to moving supplies. Let them sniff around boxes and get accustomed to the new items in their environment.

Moving on, do keep feeding and walking schedules consistent. Pets thrive on routine, and keeping it steady can provide them with a sense of normalcy amidst change. To add to that, pack a bag with their favorite toys, bedding, and snacks. Having familiar items readily available will help soothe your pet.

While you certainly should have a packing plan for your belongings, don’t overlook your pet’s needs. As you organize each room or liaise with a competent moving company, consider how the process might impact your pet. Maybe set up a quiet space where they won’t be disturbed by the hustle of packing.

Choosing the Right Mode of Transport when Moving with Pets

When you’re moving with pets, how you get them from your old home to your new one matters a lot, and the right choice can make the journey a breeze. So first, consider your pet’s size, temperament, and health. Small animals might be comfortable in a car, nestled in a carrier by your side. For larger dogs, especially those used to car rides, a road trip could be a great option. If you’re flying, check airline policies on pets. Some allow small pets in the cabin, while larger animals must travel in cargo. Always opt for direct flights to minimize stress on your pet.

Without a doubt, safety is non-negotiable. In a car, use a pet seatbelt, carrier, or barrier. This keeps them safe and prevents distractions. On a plane, ensure the carrier is airline-approved. Add a familiar blanket or toy to make it cozy. To dodge motion sickness, avoid feeding your pet right before traveling. A light meal a few hours ahead is better, especially for longer trips.

It should be noted that even with the windows cracked, cars can quickly become too hot or too cold. It’s dangerous and, in many places, illegal to leave pets alone in a parked car. Always keep them with you.

On Moving Day: Ensuring Safety and Comfort

There are, of course, many challenges people face when buying a home or simply relocation is needed; as the moving day unfolds, your priority should shift to keeping your pet safe and comfortable amid the chaos. At this time, find a quiet area away from the hustle—like a secluded room or a familiar friend’s house—where your pet can relax. Stock this space with their bedding, toys, and water to make it comforting. This spot should feel familiar, offering a retreat from the noise and activity. In addition, they provide a selection of toys and engaging puzzles in their secure space. Keeping your pet mentally stimulated helps distract them from the disruptive sounds and movements outside their sanctuary.

To add to all that, make time for quick, soothing visits to reassure your pet. These moments remind them they’re not alone, maintaining a connection amidst the upheaval. When it’s time to transition to the new home, ensure your pet is safely contained in their carrier or with a harness. If they’re not used to these restraints, introduce them gradually in the days leading up to your move. Upon arrival, resist the urge to immediately introduce your pet to every new room. Start with one designated area, allowing them to become comfortable before exploring further parts of their new home.

Adjusting to the New Home and New Normal

After choosing the right home and the subsequent move, helping your pet adjust to their new surroundings is a must. A gentle approach can make all the difference in making them feel at home. First, ensure your new environment is suitable for your pet. Check that it’s safe and has enough space for them to feel comfortable. A pet-friendly neighborhood is also a plus, offering areas for walks and play. Second, introduce your pet to the new home slowly. Start with one room—their safe space—allowing them to explore at their own pace. This method reduces overwhelm and helps them acclimate without stress.

In addition, consistent feeding, walking, and playtime schedules provide stability. Familiar routines amidst new surroundings anchor your pet, aiding in its adjustment. Before letting your pet roam, ensure the area is safe. Check for escape routes, secure windows, and doors, and remove any hazards. Safety first ensures a smooth transition. And, of course, watch for signs of anxiety or discomfort as they explore.

After settling in, it’s time to establish a new normal for you and your pet. Continue with vet visits to ensure your pet stays healthy in their new environment. Also, make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip details are updated with your new address. Likewise, gradually introduce your pet to the neighborhood. Short walks can help them get used to new sights and smells.

Final thoughts

Moving with pets adds another layer of consideration to an already complex process. However, this journey, with the essential dos and don’ts, is focused on creating a smooth transition for both you and your furry companions. One additional piece of advice as you embark on this journey is to lean on your support network. Friends, family, and even pet professionals can offer invaluable insights and support.

Armed with these guidelines, you’re well-equipped to ensure a positive moving experience for your entire family, pets included. Here’s to a smooth move and a happy, comfortable new beginning for you and your pets. Happy moving!
