In this blog post, I’d love to share the five mistakes that I actually made when I was trying to organize my home using the KonMari Method.
Rely Too Much on the “Spark Joy” Concept
One of the biggest mistakes people make—and I also made—when using the KonMari Method is relying too much on the “spark joy” concept. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t get rid of things that don’t bring you joy, but you also need to be practical. For example, getting rid of all of your clothes because they don’t “spark joy” is probably not the best idea. You still need clothes to wear!
Instead of getting rid of everything that doesn’t bring you joy, try to focus on the things that you really don’t need or things that are broken or damaged beyond repair—those are the things that you can get rid of immediately without any guilt.
Sometimes, You Just Need to “Deal With It”
Another mistake that I made when trying to organize my home using the KonMari Method was thinking that I needed to get rid of everything immediately, which, in fact, created a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety for me. This isn’t realistic, and it’s also not necessary. In some cases, you just need to “deal with it.”
Maybe because I’m a bit of a perfectionist, but I thought that I needed to get rid of everything right away to declutter my home, thus creating more stress for myself.
If you find yourself in this situation, just take a deep breath and relax. You don’t need to do everything at once—just take it one step at a time, follow the pace that makes you the most comfortable, and don’t be too hard on yourself.
Underestimate the Time It Takes
On TV, everything seemed so easy. Marie Kondo comes into someone’s home, helps them declutter in a few hours, and voilà, the person is organized for life! However, this isn’t always the case in real life. Often, people underestimate the amount of time it takes to organize their home using the KonMari Method properly.
For example, I thought I could completely declutter my home in a day or two. Boy, was I wrong! It actually took me almost two weeks to get everything done, and that was with me working on it every day for several hours.
If you’re expecting to organize your entire home using the KonMari Method in just a few days, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Instead, try to be realistic and give yourself enough time to get the job done right. When you’re decluttering your home, it’s not a quick and easy process—it takes time, patience, and effort.
Not Enough Research
One of the things that I loved about the KonMari Method is that it’s based on philosophy—only keeping what brings you joy. However, to maximize the benefits of this approach, you need to do your research.
What does this mean? It means reading Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and watching her show, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. It also means doing your research to see if the KonMari Method is really the best organizing method for you—there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, after all.
When I first started using the KonMari Method, I didn’t do enough research and read her book. As a result, I made many mistakes and wasn’t able to get the most out of her method.
