Montauk, New York, might not immediately sound like one of the best places to go fishing in the entire world. But if you visit in September or October, you’ll be shocked to see how many striped bass crowd the waters right off the coast. It won’t take long to figure out why Montauk is often referred to as the “Striped Bass Capital of the World.”
Montauk is one of the many places you can visit to enjoy a truly unique fishing experience. There are also lots of other destinations all across the planet that will enable you to take your love for fishing to the next level. Check out seven of the best fishing destinations below.
Key West, Florida
In a moment, we’re going to step outside the U.S. and give some of the top fishing spots in other parts of the world their just due. But before doing this, we have to mention the incredible fishing you’ll find in Key West. Whether you want to fish for cobia, barracuda, tarpon, sailfish, grouper, tuna, or mahi-mahi, you’ll find them in the blue waters near Key West.
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
When you fish in many of the destinations on this list, you’ll need to be ready to travel 10, 20, or even 30 miles off the coast before getting a line in the water. You’ll also need to know where exactly to fish and have the right baiting tools on hand to start reeling fish in regularly. But in Cabo San Lucas, you can begin bagging marlin, wahoo, dorado, and other exotic fish after traveling just a couple of miles off the coast.
The Bahamas
The Bahamas is known for its white sandy beaches, its impossibly blue water, and, of course, its swimming pigs. But it’s also earned a reputation for delivering amazing fishing experiences throughout the country, with some of its best fishing offered off the coasts of Andros Island and Grand Bahamas. Marlins are found in great numbers in the Bahamas, to the point that the Bahamas has adopted the marlin as its national fish. You can also go after bonefish, tarpon, bluefin, and blackfin tuna as long as you bring the required fishing gear.
Belize
If you want to land a trophy-size fish, Belize might not be your best bet. But if you’re intrigued by the idea of filling up your boat with bonefish, tarpon, and permit, you won’t find many fishing destinations that offer what Belize can. Outside of being breathtakingly beautiful from every angle, Belize also has schools of hundreds of fish swimming around in its waters with many of them demonstrating an aggressiveness you won’t find anywhere else.
Nova Scotia, Canada
Back in 1979, an angler set a world record by reeling in a gigantic bluefin tuna that weighed a whopping 1,496 pounds. The chances of history repeating itself and you catching an identical fish are slim to none, as this record has stood the test of time and never come close to being touched. But there are still plenty of bluefin tuna off the coast of Nova Scotia as well as Prince Edward Island that weigh anywhere from 800 to over 1,000 pounds.
Bermuda
Taking a trip to Bermuda will put you in a perfect position to fish for everything from white marlin to yellowfin tuna, but it’s the big blue marlin in the area that should captivate your attention. The largest big blue marlin ever caught in Bermuda weighed 1,352 pounds, and while you’ll need to get lucky to come anywhere close to catching a fish that big, the fact you could potentially do it will make for a memorable experience.
Malindi, Kenya
Of all the fishing destinations on this list, this one will require you to do the most travel. It will, however, be well worth it once you arrive and begin trying to achieve a billfish royal slam. This will call for you to catch a handful of different species in a single day, including an Atlantic blue marlin, a Pacific blue marlin, a white marlin, a striped marlin, a black marlin, an Atlantic sailfish, a Pacific sailfish, a swordfish, and a spearfish. Accomplishing this could earn you a much-deserved nod from the International Game Fish Association.
