Pancakes and maple syrup are a logical and common combination. However, for those that dislike maple syrup, are looking for a less sugary topping, or simply want to try something new, there are many alternative pancake toppings that are delicious and filling. Alternative pancake toppings are a great way to make over a common breakfast.
Simple Toppings
Blueberry pancakes taste amazing when simply sprinkled with a dusting of powdered sugar. A thin sugar dusting can be easily achieved using a sugar shaker or by spooning a teaspoon of powdered sugar into a sifter.
For a breakfast on a peanut butter and jam sandwich try smearing peanut butter directly onto hot pancakes. Top with a favorite jam or jelly and serve immediately. The hot, melty peanut butter makes a delicious pancake topping.
Sliced and mashed fruit sweetened with sugar will deliciously top any pancake. Fruit topping is especially delicious when paired with whipped cream.
Low Sugar Toppings
Some are limited to alternative pancake toppings because traditional toppings are high in sugar. A simple dusting of spices can create a delicious low-sugar pancake topping. Cinnamon and nutmeg work especially well. If a more decadent and rich flavor is desired butter the hot pancakes before dusting them with spices.
While not low in calories or fat, cream makes a delicious low-sugar pancake topping. Simply drizzle hot pancakes with whipping cream straight from the carton. Cream-coated pancakes are also delicious with a dusting of cinnamon.
Avocados are an excellent way to incorporate healthy fats into a diet. Covering a pancake with a few slices of ripe avocado and a spoonful of salsa, if desired, will make a delightful low-sugar pancake topping.
Decadent and Hearty
Consider topping pancakes with other breakfast staples. Pancakes can make a great foundation for a breakfast sandwich. Top a hot pancake with bacon or sausage and a fried egg. Complete the sandwich with an additional pancake.
Hot fudge is another sinfully delightful pancake topping. While there are definitely more nutritious toppings, a pancake can make a wonderful base for an ice cream sundae type breakfast. Smother hot pancakes with hot fudge, whipped cream and ice cream, and other favorite ice cream toppings like sprinkles or cherries. This pancake topper should be reserved for special occasions.
The possibility for delicious non-traditional pancake toppings is endless. Try a few suggestions listed here or be adventurous and create your own. There is never a reason to submit to the same boring breakfast more than once.
